In my many years working with parents, I have spoken with so many people who face breastfeeding trauma and whose breastfeeding experience has contributed to their well-being difficulties. The way we feed our children can bring up so many emotions, and public health campaigns such as “breast is best” have resulted in a huge amount of guilt, shame and loss being experienced by those who choose not to, or who are unable to, breastfeed.
At GLB Psychology I believe that what is best for parents and their baby is the right choice, rather than having a one size fits all approach to feeding like “breast is best”. However, I understand that even when rationally you know that you did all you could, or that breastfeeding wasn’t for you, it does not always take away the felt experience of guilt, loss and shame that can come with making a different choice. That is where I come in.
I can support you to bring kindness and compassion to your feelings around your feeding journey, to help you understand the feelings of loss you are experiencing, and to see feeding as one of many positive experiences you are able to give your baby, however you do it.
